There was a time in the mid-eighties when every mixtape that I put together began with the same track - "Almost Prayed" by The Weather Prophets. I remember seeing the band play at Treforest Poly in my hometown of Pontypridd and remember more than a few discussions about the band and their frontman Pete Astor with a lad in work, Steve, who was a massive fan of Pete's previous band The Loft.
For those unfamiliar with the heyday of Indie, The Loft released two acclaimed singles on the legendary Creation label, with "Up the Hill and Down the Slope" reaching No 3 in the independent charts. Pete and Dave Morgan formed The Weather Prophets in 1985, going on to have four top ten independent singles between 1986 and 1988. Their album Judges, Juries and Horsemen was a number one album on the indie charts in 1988.
Pete began a solo career in 1990 and has released 10 albums to this point, as well fronting Ellis Sound and The Wisdom of Harry. His latest solo album, Time on Earth, came out earlier this year.
Pete works as a senior lecturer at the University of Westminster and is the author of Richard Hell and the Voidoids' Blank Generation.
It's a true honour to be able to feature Pete Astor on Have Yourself a Merry Indie Christmas.
