about

Back in the 80s, when I used to parade around my hometown in a variety of Indie t-shirts seven days a week, I also had an obsession with compiling the perfect indie mixtape. New songs would be added here and there, while others would inevitably be dropped into the bargain bin of my memory banks. There was consistency, though. Some songs are just classics, period! So the ever present songs included 'Almost Prayed' by The Weather Prophets, 'Word Around Town', by Westlake and 'My Favourite Dress' by The Wedding Present. Also undroppable was 'Gracelands' by The Bible, which brings me to the singer/songwriter Boo Hewerdine.

It's no easy task to summarise Boo's career in a few sentences, but here are some of the highlights -

A re-released 'Gracelands' reached no 51 in the UK charts in May 1989 and it's follow up 'Honey Be Good' peaked at 54 a few months later.

Boo's solo albums feature guest appearances by the likes of Richard Thompson, Martha Wainwright and Eddi Reader (another contributor to this album). Reader's first hit single after Fairground Attraction had called it a day, was with Boo's 'Patience of Angels'. The song was nominated for the Ivor Novello award in 1995.

Boo has written songs for film and tv, including Fever Pitch, Twenty Four Seven and Our Boy.

His songs have been covered by k.d. Lang, David McAlmont, Brian Kennedy and Paul Young.

Boo's current album Understudy was released in 2022, through Reveal records. I want to say a huge thank you to Tom at Reveal for making the labels music available to this project.

It's a massive, massive thrill to be able to include Boo Hewerdine on this album, just as it was to be able to feature The Wedding Present, BOB and the Nightingales on last year's charity compilation V4Velindre.
