Songs released via Netherland’s Snowflake Christmas Single Club (SCSC) featured heavily on the original Have Yourself a Merry Indie Christmas album. The tracks by OH Gunquit!, The Boy Least Likely To, Swansea Sound, bis, Green Seagull, The Detox Twins and Rope Store are testament to the quality of material being released on SCSC. No surprise then that the 2023 deluxe version of the album includes a further track released via the label. Jetstream Pony’s “Grief of a (Frozen) Sailor” was originally released through SCSC in 2020 and I’m terrifically grateful to the band for making it available to me.
Fronted by Beth Arzy (Trembling Blue Stars & The Fireworks) and featuring Shaun Charman* (The Wedding Present, The Popguns, The Fireworks) on guitar, Kerry Boettcher on bass and Hannes Muller on drums, Jetstream Pony has built a fine reputation for “hazy noise pop” since releasing their eponymous debut in 2020.
* Shaun helpfully gave me some background to the song’s evolution:
‘The track was written on a rainy Sunday afternoon with my then 10 year old daughter Nina singing vocals. It was about the weather, though originally storm rather than snow. When Snowflake asked us to do a 7” single, we just changed the lyrics to snow and recorded it with the band’.
