about

Stephen Duffy was, along with John Taylor and Nick Rhodes, a founder-member of Duran Duran. He was the band's original lead singer and also played bass. He quit a year before the combo signed to EMI. As Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy, the singer-songwriter went on to notch a top 5 UK hit with 'Kiss Me' in 1985. Later in the year, 'Icing on the Cake' also reached the top 20.

The Lilac Time's eponymous debut album was released in 1987 and the band has continued to release albums regularly, the latest being 2019's Return to Us. In the interim, Stephen worked on a wide variety of solo projects and songwriting partnerships, the most successful being his collaboration with Robbie Williams which resulted in the number one single 'Radio' in 2004. In 2005, he co-wrote and co-produced Williams' album Intensive Care, which sold 8 million copies worldwide.

In September 2009, Stephen released his first major career retrospective, Memory & Desire - 30 Years in the Wilderness, covering both his work as a solo artist and as The Lilac Time.

The Guardian, in a piece which posits Stephen as the unluckiest living pop star, sums up his oeuvre this way 'The Lilac Time made four immaculate, timeless albums in their first phase; 1988’s self-titled debut and 1989’s Paradise Circus particularly feel like having warm honey poured into your ears. Listening to them now, it seems unfathomable that melodic wonders such as American Eyes, Return to Yesterday and Together, the euphoric scat pop of Too Sooner Late Than Better and sumptuous ballads And the Ship Sails on, The Last to Know and The Beauty in Your Body weren’t ushered into the lexicon of superlative folk classics.

'The Needles' was released in 2019.
