Jyoti Mishra formed White Town in 1989 and the band released their eponymous EP the following year. The band's debut album Socialism, Sexuality & Sexism. Mistra says of his debut that 'It's the longest record I could make, the most you could fit onto a CD back then. I was trying to make an album that was pop and indie but also pretty much claustrophobic, embarrassing and disturbing in lots of ways'. "Why I Hate Christmas" is taken from the album.
In 1997, White Town (by this stage a one-man project) released their follow up album Women in Technology on EMI. It's key single 'Your Woman' became a UK No1 single and a hit record all over Europe and in America. The album's lead track 'Undressed' also charted in the UK, at no 57.
Jyoti's politics - he is a radical, revolutionary Marxist - meant that his time at EMI was always likely to be short-lived. His next album Peek & Poke (2000) was released on his own Bzangy label. His latest album Fairchild Semiconductor (2021) was also released via Bzangy.
